The Scenario...this is how it will play out

September 7, 2024
/ by Ron Holdraker

Okay, there has been another mass shooting, making it number 30, so far this year.

We (the media) have to react. I know, let’s do another take on those nasty AR-14 guns. We’ll interview a number of parents of former victims. That will evoke an equally nasty response from gun advocates with phrases like "Guns don’t kill people, people kill people"... "What next, we ban all knives"..."It is my right to own a gun, even an AR-14. The second amendment.."

Of course, we will have a bevy of politicians wanting their 15 seconds on camera, or in written quotes. Obviously the Democrats will scream "Something must be done...No more carnage...our children".

The Republican response will be somewhat muted, not wanting to anger the far right. Within days they too will hope all calms down and the second amendment will be bellowed about.

Then comes the stories about how much money is involved in lobbyists, on both sides of the issue.

Oh, please don’t forget the media and their part in all this.

"It was wrong to show the pictures of the shooters, why give them any supposed glory."

Of course, the usual "We just want to notify you that the images you see may be too graphic for some..."

There will be the rehashing of all the mass shootings for the past year, the past decades. Followed by more interviews with kids, teachers, whomever, was within an earshot of the crime. Yes, we will go back and interview  the student that has grown up and still remembers the day.

Next comes the determined politician with a number of laws he/she proposes to solve the problem, any problem.

This will be followed by the opposition stating there are enough laws already on the books.

Then, there will be another shooting somewhere we never heard of and the clatter will start over.

Someone will find a specialist in some field that will add their two cents along with a retired FBI agent and his/her take on why this continues to happens.

Omigosh, don’t forget to get a 30 second bite, the one-liner from the presidential candidates.

The Democrat will promise to take action. The Republican will hand out "sorry for their loss" quips until everything dies down.

The far right media will heap a whole lot of ‘troubled youth’ and ‘mental’ illness crap to cloud reasoning behind such conduct. "No one in their right mind could conceive such behavior."

"The parents, yes, it was the parents’ fault. They left the guns out where the unauthorized person could get their hands on them."

Perhaps a family history of abuse, neglect, bullying by classmates is the spark in the latest killings? It will definitely add some dimension, damnation to the story.

"Numbers, we need numbers, how many have been killed? Don’t worry about the wounded, both physically and mentally. That is a side story.

Then there is the pressing question. Why is this happening? It is a good catch-phrase for editors and nightly news anchors.

Let’s get a ‘specialist’ to give their all encompassing, yet vague explanation. "I know, let’s get the usual mixed panel of journalists to do a roundtable discussion. That will fill a good half hour, six paragraphs of space.

We could always go back to Columbine, show the kids scrambling with their hands up. Obviously Columbine was the beginning, right?

Well, actually no, there were major mass killings before Columbine, but that was very dramatic and the lead headline of the time.

The noise will die down, at least until the trial of the latest, or perhaps the next one, whatever. Nothing really changes. There is way too much fear on all sides to rock that boat.

The scenario, this is how it will play out. Have I got it right?
