The American electorate has spoken. Not only did President Trump outwit the pollsters, he also secured the overall popular vote and secured the Senate for Republicans.
In the Washington Post column by Theodoric Meyer and Leigh Ann Caldwel it was noted: "Trump’s victory represents a remarkable comeback after two impeachments; his conviction in New York for concealing hush money payments to an adult-film actress; indictments in three other criminal cases; and the recent backlash against a comedian who called Puerto Rico an “island of garbage” at one of his rallies. Voters looked past all of that."
The Huff Post wrote: "He has regained this seat of immense power with fresh grievances, threats of being a dictator on “day one” and calls for retribution against his “enemies.”
In a plea for support for donations the Huff Post piece also wrote:
"There will be no respect for the rule of law — only the rule of one. It is the greatest challenge to our Democratic experiment since the Civil War. This is not a drill. But now is not the time to cower or capitulate. HuffPost is doing neither. We are committed to covering Trump with the same rigor and honesty that we always have."
In the short run, the Trump confirmation is bad for Ukraine and its war with Russia. Expect U.S. support to dwindle to less than nothing, along with any chance for NATO to exist in the long run. There is no chance for NATO to expand and expect far reaching political changes throughout Europe.
It will be a bad time for conservationists. Expect limits on drilling, and environmental concerns to all but dissipate.
There will be no large tariffs on China, except for solar technology and electric vehicle production. Elon Musk’s protection for Tesla will soon take effect.
Those billionaires who accepted the Trump formula will continue to prosper, but I doubt the lower and middle classes will benefit in the long run.
Trump is not stupid enough and neither are those surrounding him to hit many Chinese imports with higher tariffs since the cost of everything from paper cups to a quandary of everyday items would increase making households upset. Also the tit-for-tat response from other countries would overwhelm American buying habits.
Military spending will only slightly increase since "America First’ and more isolationism takes hold.
The cost of goods has already begun to stabilize under current conditions, but other Western leaning countries will continue to adjust to the new world order. Don’t expect promised mass deportations of illegal migrants to take place since industry relying on foreign workers would revolt. Besides, where do you send illegal migrants? They are not all Mexican, or Hispanic and the costs would cripple the U.S. economy. On top of that, the Trump administration does not want to repeat the child/parent fiasco from his previous administration. Also, Mexico, one of our country’s top trading partners, would not take it so kindly.
Building the real, or imaginary wall will continue, but as previously claimed, Mexico will not pay for it.
Pity the poor Palestinians as the two state nation option with Israel will all but disappear.
Expect Trump cabinet selection picks to be more cautious and easily confirmed. The same for any Supreme Court nominations that will glide through and make America very conservative for generations to come.
With the passing of a number of state enshrining abortion laws, even in more conservative states, Trump is not dumb enough to take on that mountain...hopefully.
As for Putin and a host of other dictators, expect a carte blanche for changes and acceptance. This will move the U.S. towards a new world order that will result towards more isolationism.
Industry, that has been moving slowly towards addressing climate change, will be slowed ,leading to eventual catastrophe, unless the public recognizes it really exists.
Regulations on banking and corporate acquisitions will be lifted, allowing the stock market, already in a growth frenzy to go wild, in the short term. Musk’s stock in Tesla is exploding.
Accept that certain FCC (Federal Communications Commission) laws and regulations to have an impact on networks and some social media as the upcoming administration takes a bit of revenge. Also, look for more acquisitions of major newspapers as more billionaires fend off any form of opposition, not including this one, of course.
Expect an appointment of the Attorney General position to make wide changes in personnel and adopted cases as a ceratin amount of revenge against critics and adversaries comes to fruition.
Promises of massive changes in the appointment of Trump favored federal employees will uproot the system and eventually create a backlash.
Yes, Trump being a convicted felon and current cases involving the January 6th event will disappear and probably a whole lot of presidential pardons will be made. After all, Trump recently declared "Jan. 6 a day of “love.”
Promised appointments of Robert Kennedy to any health departments would cause pure havoc and probably would be subdued.
The promised appointment of Elon Musk to any form of budget cutting and debt reduction will be cursed by Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and of course foreign aid.
Promised tax cuts involving no taxing on social security payouts, along with no taxing of tips and overtime would be totally impractical and make any debt reduction out of this world. Promises, promises make the political world go round.
The Democrats have lost ground to ardent supporters with confusion and stupid rhetoric and will take years to readjust, but the Dems must also take credit for their stupid moves.
One House Democrat said. “The Democratic Party has a major working-class voter issue. It started a decade ago as a working-class White issue. It’s now gotten even worse and spread across racial lines.”
Meanwhile the Republican sunrise will eventually lead to something weird, something we have never experienced. Good or bad the electorate has chosen.
Will this lead to overall changes in democracy as we know it? Probably, but time and that uneven swinging pendulum will be the determiner.
The President Abraham Lincoln attributed quote:
“You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time,” will really be tested in the coming years.
As for this newspaper, nothing will change, support us, or not, I will question authority with In This Corner and those who chose pure politics over our state, county or nation.
