Long Acres in Macedon has changed quite a bit over the years. The family farm looks much different than it did decades ago, and continues to change year to year thanks to the fourth generation now operating the sprawling property.
Home to a large market, ice cream shop and acres of activities, Long Acre Farms is likely best know for its massive corn maze which celebrates its 29th season this year.
The longest running corn maze of its type in New York and second longest running in the country, Long Acres and the Allen family have seen multiple generations enjoy their property since first entering the agro-tourism business in the early 90’s.
What began as a small farm stand has now grown to encompass dozens of acres on the Allen family’s farm which includes multiple play areas and even an inflatable jumping pillow.
While the kids play, grab a wood-fired pizza or stroll over to JD Wine Cellars, the family’s wine tasting room featuring their own creations.
“JD” stands for Joan and Doug Allen, the founders of both the winery and Long Acre Farms.
Audrey, Joan and Doug’s youngest daughter, came back full time to the farm in 2018 to join her sister Sarah in running the operation.
The two are now running the show, giving their parent’s some much deserved rest after decades of building the business.
While the prospect of driving a tractor and actually farming wasn’t top of mind for either sister, the two have found they each enjoy different sides of the business and it’s working well for them.
Audrey says it was about finding the right rhythm. "That was a big thing for us. It was important to have a better work-life balance."
So while Audrey runs the maze, wine and adult activities, Sarah handles the food and catering side of things. While both of their parents can still be found pitching in, Audrey says she’s grateful to see them being able to step back.
This year’s Amazing Maize Maze celebrates the timeless sound of music with a giant gramophone spinning its way through nearly 5 acres of corn.
Visitors can take a casual trip through the corn or build a complete maze map and tackle all 12 Kernels of Knowledge along the way.
Audrey says that while the maze and Back 40 area require admission, it’s free to come and enjoy much of the property.
"We love families and fall and we’re a farm for everyone. There’s not just one way to enjoy Long Acre."
When not tending to the market and farm, Audrey and Sarah can often be found on Facebook posting videos of their journey throughout the fall months on the market’s page.
