January 4, 2022

On December 22nd, students in the Health Professions program at the Wayne Technical and Career Center (WTCC) were recognized for earning Personal Care Aide (PCA) certifica - tion. This is the first secondary school in New York State to offer the Personal Care Aide (PCA) certification. The instructors for the Health Professions program are Rachel Higbee, RN and Jessica Shaver, RN, BSN.

Andy McVey, Principal of the Wayne Technical and Career Center gave opening remarks and welcomed parents and guests. Andy McVey commended the students on their dedication, intelligence and compassion.

Andy McVey turned the program over to Rachel Higbee who shared with the audience that recent curriculum changes now allow students in the Health Professions program at WTCC to have the opportunity to earn 5 dif- ferent certifications over 2 years. The certifications are: Personal Care Aide (PCA), CPR, First Aid, Home Health Aide (HHA), and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Students in the program also earn dual credit from Finger Lakes Community College for English 101 Composition 1 (3 credits) and Bio 110 Fundamentals of Human Anatomy and Physiology (3 credits).

Chelsea Caswell (English) and Susan Stalls (Science) integrate these college subjects with the Health Professions instructors.

Rachel Higbee turned the program over to Louise Bigando, MSN, RN, Ed., SDL, Instructional Services Associate for Health Sciences, Career and Technical Education-New York State Education Department who joined by Zoom. Louise Bigando described the labor-intensive process of work- ing with WTCC to develop the first secondary school level program to offer the Personal Care Aide (PCA) and Home Health Aide (HHA) certifica tions in New York State. Louise Bigando informed the audience that each certification (PCA, HHA, CNA) is its

own direct employment opportunity.

Louise Bigando stated that WTCC is the exemplar for other Health Science programs in New York State. Louise Bigando told the students, “You have dedicated your time and applied yourselves in the clinical settings to make true and meaningful connections with those patients, clients, and residents you serve and will continue to care for.

Please never underestimate the importance of the work you are doing and how valuable you are to each and every person you are caring for.” Louise Bigando then welcomed the students to the healthcare professions. Jessica Shaver announced the names of students who earned the Personal Care Aide certifi cation and thanked the audience and guests.
