The drug overdose epidemic within the United States is a continuing public health and public safety concern. Wayne County Public Health encourages residents to do their part and turn in unneeded medications from their homes as a method of preventing medication misuse by taking advantage of National Drug Take Back Day on April 22nd. Medication take back options are the best approach to safely disposing of unused or expired prescription and nonprescription medications. When medications are not properly disposed of, it can harm our environment. Improperly disposed medications can negatively affect our water supply, affecting local wildlife and contaminating our drinking water. Unused medications often find their way into the wrong hands and can become misused, potentially leading to opioid addiction and possible overdose. Before dropping off any prescription medications be sure to remove all personal information and medicine packaging. All medication dropped off at a take back location will be safely destroyed. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and various police departments throughout the county will be hosting take back sites from 10:00 am to 2:00pm.
