To raise awareness about the importance of preventing cervical cancer through regular screenings and HPV Vaccination, Wayne County Public Health is recognizing January as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. According to the CDC, cervical cancer most often occurs in women over the age of 30. The main cause of cervical cancer is HPV, the Human Papillomavirus. Untreated HPV infection with certain high risk types of the virus can cause cellular changes that can develop into cervical cancer. HPV is a common virus that is passed from one person to another during sex. At least half of all sexually active people will become infected with HPV, thankfully most of these individuals will clear the infection, but for some, long term infections can develop into cervical cancer.
Screening tests such as the Pap test are important because they can find pre-cancer or cervical cancer early, when it is highly treatable. The HPV test identifies if the HPV virus is present in the cervix. Other ways to reduce the risk for developing cervical cancer is to prevent STD infections and HIV by practicing safe sex through the correct and consistent use of a condom and by avoiding or quitting the use of tobacco products. Not smoking or quitting tobacco products is beneficial in preventing various types of cancer including cervical cancer. In addition, the HPV vaccine can prevent cervical cancer. The CDC recommends children ages 11–12 get 2 doses of HPV vaccine, given 6 to 12 months apart. HPV vaccines can be given as early as the age of 9. Only 2 doses are needed if the first dose was given before the 15th birthday. ACIP, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends HPV vaccination for everyone through the age of 26 years who were not adequately vaccinated when younger.
