Lyons, NY— Wayne County Public Health received confirmation today of two lab confirmed cases of measles in unvaccinated individuals. These positive reports mark the first documented cases of the highly contagious virus in Wayne County.
Wayne County Public Health is currently working closely with the confirmed cases, their contacts, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), and local health care providers. The overall risk to the public remains low, especially for those fully vaccinated against measles. Fully vaccinated individuals are those with two documented doses of the MMR vaccine, laboratory-confirmed immunity, or anyone born before 1957.
Measles is extremely contagious, and anyone unvaccinated, pregnant, under 12 months of age, or immuno- compromised is at greatest risk. Individuals who are unvaccinated or those with a recent exposure to someone with measles should be alert for the symptoms of measles which include high fever, rash, runny nose, cough, and red eyes. If symptoms develop contact your health care provider or local health department. If you are experiencing symptoms and need to seek medical care, please call the facility before arriving for care to allow for the appropriate infection prevention measures to be taken.
Wayne County Public Health provides measles vaccination by appointment.
