Lyons, NY – Wayne County Public Health is advising of a potential measles exposure at the Pine Creek Feed and Seed from September 9-11, 2026. Individuals who are not immune to measles and were exposed are at risk for developing measles. Those who were exposed to measles and develop symptoms should contact their health care provider. Wayne County Public Health advises individuals
to call ahead before seeking care at an emergency department, health care provider office, or urgent care. This will reduce the risk of exposures to others at these facilities.
Individuals are considered protected or immune to measles if born they were before 1957, received two doses of measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine, have had measles disease, or have a lab test confirming immunity.
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness:
• Symptoms include high fever, cough, red eyes, and rash, and usually begin 10-12 days after exposure, but can appear anytime from 7-21 days after exposure.
• A person with measles can spread the virus starting 4 days before the rash appears through 4
days after.
• Measles can be especially dangerous for young children, adults older than 20 years of age, pregnant people, and people with weakened immune systems. There is no specific treatment for measles.
The MMR vaccine is the single best way to prevent measles and its potentially serious complications.
Two doses of the MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles. Anyone who is unsure if they are protected against measles should contact their health care provider or Wayne County Public Health. General information about measles can be found at:
