Christine K. Callanan was officially sworn in as Wayne County District Attorney on Monday, January 1, 2025, at 12:00 pm ET at the Wayne County Courthouse, located at 26 Church St, Lyons, NY 14489.
This historic occasion marks the first time a woman has been elected to serve as the top prosecutor in Wayne County.
Christine was introduced in a speech from Wayne County Republican Chairman MaryAnne Nicosia-McCarthy.
Also in attendance to celebrate her November election win was Wayne County Conservative Chairman Mike Garlock.
Having served as Acting District Attorney for the past year, Callanan brings extensive experience, a commitment to justice, and a vision for ensuring safety and fairness in the community. Her swearing-in signifies a new chapter for the Wayne County District Attorney’s Office.
The official administration of the oath of office was made by Honorable Richard M. Healy, and the ceremony was attended by local dignitaries, members of law enforcement, community leaders, and supporters.
As noted by Nicosia-McCarthy, this is the second time in Wayne County history that a former D.A. has sworn in the current D.A. County Court Judge Rick Healy was sworn in to his role as D.A. by County Court Judge Steve Sirkin, and Judge Healy performed Callanan’s swearing in.
Christine, an interim, for the past year, was duly elected to the position in November, following the retirement of D.A. Mike Calarco.
Monroe County District Attorney Mike Green hired Christine in February of 2011. After Sandra Doorley became District Attorney, she changed the office policy of promotion based on seniority to open applications.
Christine remembers telling Sandra and Perry Duckles, the Chief of Violent Felonies, that if they gave her the chance she would outwork everyone. That is still true today.
“I have worked hard to prove myself. What I didn’t know, I asked and learned. I spent five and half years in Violent Felonies prosecuting Murders, Assaults, Robberies, and Burglaries. By the time I left the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office after almost seven and a half years there, I had tried over 50 violent felony jury trial,” said the new Wayne County D.A.
Callanan started in May 2018 in the Wayne County District Attorney’s Office as the Second Assistant.
When First Assistant Dave Shaw left, DA Mike Calarco offered her the job.
In Callanan’s speech following her oath of office, she thanked her supporters, law enforcement, the Board of Supervisors, colleagues in the D.A.’s office and especially her new husband, Dave Giacalone, and their two children Adalyn and Andrew.
