Wayne County Treasurer Patrick Schmitt has announced that he will step down from his elected position effective January 4, 2026.
Schmitt, who has served as County Treasurer since January 1, 2019, said the decision reflects a personal desire to pursue new opportunities outside of public office.
“This was not an easy decision,” Schmitt said. “After careful thought, I’ve concluded that it’s time for me to move on. The Treasurer’s role is to serve as an independent voice for taxpayers on financial matters and to maintain the county’s books and records.” Schmitt acknowledged that the position comes with unique challenges and responsibilities. “Public service requires collaboration and trust, and while there are always differing perspectives, I remain proud of the work my team has accomplished” he noted.
Schmitt was last elected in 2023 and his term of office would have ended December 31, 2026.
Treasurer Schmitt confirmed he will work closely with the staff to ensure a smooth transition.
