The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and the Newark Police Department report an officer involved shooting incident which occurred in the parking lot at the Newark Police Department.

On 8/23/26, at approximately 1723 hrs, an intoxicated man entered the lobby of the Newark Police Department and upon being asked how he could be helped, he produced a pistol and began complaining about a prior incident that he believed that NPD Officers were involved in. After being asked to put down the weapon, the subject then held the gun to his head. He then proceeded to exit the station, still in possession of the weapon.

An arriving Sheriff’s Deputy gave several orders to the man to drop the weapon. The individual then proceeded to point the gun at the Deputy. The deputy then fired his service weapon at the male, causing the individual to eventually comply with the Deputy’s orders. The male was not struck or injured by bullets.  The gun was later determined to be a BB gun.

The male was taken into custody and is currently being held under the Mental Hygiene Law at an undisclosed hospital. The investigation into the man’s actions is ongoing, and criminal charges are pending upon his release from the hospital. His name is not being released at this time. 

Sheriff Milby has directed an administrative review of the incident to determine whether the actions of the Deputy were consistent with Sheriff’s Office policies, procedures, training, and applicable law. The involved Deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending the completion of that review. Administrative leave is a non-disciplinary measure and should not be interpreted as a finding of wrongdoing.
