Passed away on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at the age of 97.
Mary sustained injuries from an auto accident in 2006 that left her disabled and unable to return to her home. Gratitude for the care and kindness by the nurses and aides at the Fairport Baptist Home where Mary resided for 2 years, and the Clifton Springs Nursing Home which was her home for 16 years.
Mary was born on July 12, 1927, in Clifton Springs, NY. Mary attended school in Manchester, NY and married LeRoy “Roy” Aplin on August 8, 1952, in Newark, NY. Roy built their forever home on Bear Hill Drive, Palmyra, NY.
In response to the lack of workers during WWII, Garlock sent recruiters door-to-door to fill the void as summer help. Mary answered the call while still in high school and at 16 (1943) became a permanent Garlock employee. Starting as a secretary, Mary became proficient in telecommunications – expanding her ability to communicate with Garlock’s international clients. She was the “silent” office prankster and had great relationships with her co-workers. Mary retired from Garlock after 50 years of service.
Mary was a very active and devoted member of the James R. Hickey American Legion Auxiliary for many years.
Mary is predeceased by her husband Roy; parents Edgar and Beatrice (Macumber) Burke, brother John W. Burke; sister Katherine Burke VanGorder; dear friend and sister-in-law Leona Aplin Scheetz, brothers-in-law John Scheetz, Earl Robinson, and Eric VanGorder. She is survived by her sister Beatrice Burke Robinson; Niece Judy Robinson, Nephews Patrick Robinson (Sharon), Brad Robinson (Laura), Rick Aplin, great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Special gratitude to Donna Curran Crouse for her loyal friendship to Mary over these many years.
Graveside services in East Newark Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family during summer 2025. Online condolences@www.rlyostfuneralhome.com
