WALWORTH: Don passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 20, 2024, at the age of 88, surrounded by his loving family. He is predeceased by his wife Anne Polle Barnes, and his parents Donald Anthony Barnes and Mary Iuppa Barnes. He is survived by his children Mark Barnes, Mary (Oreste) Capone, Laurie (Todd) Packer, Lisa (Ron) Gross, and Christine (Peter) Panepento; thirteen grandchildren, Chantel (Peter) Foster, Jeanette (Phil) Oettinger, John (Giovanna) Capone, Gina Capone, Travis (Nicole) Packer, Meghan (Kenny) Zirbel, Jamie (Grant) Gefell, Tyler Gross, Trevor Gross, Carly Gross, Jessica (Jacob) Keymel, Morgan Panepento, and Mary Lynn Panepento; twelve great-grandchildren, Evan, Micah, Addy, Elise, Gianna, Ella, Annalise, Brayden, Madilyn, Riley, Luca and Greyson. He is also survived by his sister Carole Bowen, many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Don grew up in Greece, NY. He attended Catholic schools and graduated from Aquinas in 1954. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Navy and upon returning he joined the local 86 Electrical Workers Union, and finished his career with the Eastman Kodak Company retiring in 1991. Don married his high school sweetheart, Anne, in 1957. Together they had five children, and in 1970 purchased the farm in Walworth. He rebuilt the farmhouse and spent his life raising a family on a small country farm; which later became his family’s legacy. Don was passionate about hunting and fishing. He hunted with his grandfather, father, and a group of friends that later became the Jersey Hill Sportsman Club. He enjoyed his later years fishing. He and Anne spent their summers at the cottage on Waneta Lake and ten wonderful winters seasons at Pine Island in Florida, where they made wonderful friends and enjoyed having family visit.
A Mass of the celebraton of life will be held on Friday, October 25, 2024 at 10AM, at St. Mary’s of the Lake Church, 5823 Walworth Road, Ontario, NY 14519. Please join the family for a reception, and time of fellowship, following at the parish hall. Donations in memory of Don may be directed to the church or to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
