Bastian, Douglas Robert

NORTH ROSE: 75, passed away on Monday, December 30, 2024 at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Douglas was born on May 31, 1949, to Robert and Jane Bastian. After graduating from East High School in Rochester, NY, Doug enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he proudly served two tours in Vietnam. His dedication and sacrifices in service to his country were a testament to his commitment.

Upon returning from Vietnam, Doug pursued a degree in Engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology, earning a Bachelor of Science. His career in engineering spanned many years at Xerox Corporation, where he made significant contributions. Following his retirement, Doug remained deeply engaged in product development and machine innovation, earning several patents for his creative work.

For 25 years, Doug made Bonnie Castle Road his home, where he could often be found tinkering with his boat, sharing vivid war stories, working on various projects, immersing himself in his cherished stamp collection, and telling jokes that never failed to raise an eyebrow or two.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Jane Bastian. He is survived by his sons, Eric (Jillean) Bastian of Columbus, Ohio, and Kevin (Alicia) Bastian of Phelps, New York; his five grandchildren, Emilia, Nicoletta, Parker, Lainey, and Reese; and his three sisters, Anne (Tom) Putnam, Susan Bastian, and Mary (Jim) Lapp.

In his final years, Doug faced the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease, supported lovingly by his sister, Mary, and brother-in-law, Jim. The journey was challenging, frustrating, sad but also joyful, hilarious, loving and rewarding. And in many ways, we believe that Alzheimer’s gave us the time to know Doug better, to discover new things about him, share new experiences, and love him more.

A celebration of Doug’s life and private burial will be held in the spring, at the discretion of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Houston Methodist Nantz National Alzheimer Center by visiting; https://givingforms.houstonmethodist.org/NantzGivingForm

As Doug would say, “Goodbye for now.”
