Haywood, Margery “Margie”

ONTARIO: Margie passed away on October 3, 2024, at the age of 87. She was born in Clearfield, PA to the late James and Mary McBride. She was also predeceased by her husbands, George H. Ward and Jack C. Haywood, brother-in-law, George Schenk.

Margie is survived by her sons, Michael (Heidi) Ward and Christopher Ward; siblings, James (Patricia) McBride and Sandee Schenk her husband Ken VanDewalle, her grandchildren, Andrew and Alison Ward and many nieces and nephews.

Margie was born and raised in Clearfield Pennsylvania, where she was a drum major for the Clearfield Bisons where she also met Michael and Christopher’s father George Ward, whom she married in 1956.

Soon after their marriage they moved to Ontario where she has lived for nearly seven decades. During her time in Ontario, she was extremely active in the community where she proudly supported husband George become town justice, actively supported local political candidates, baked hundreds of wedding and birthday cakes, and being the Mrs. Santa Claus for years at the Ontario Primary school. (A role she was born to play)

After George passed away in 1978, Margie married Jack Haywood with whom she continued her community involvement and travel until his death in 2010.

Margie was blessed to be active with as a member of the “Golden Girls” as well as spending time with her sister Sandee. Also, she loved bragging about her “wonderful” grandson Andrew who lived with her, and her excitement about her granddaughter Alison’s upcoming wedding. 

Margie lived a full and active life and passed away a contented woman.

Family and friends may gather for visitation from 4-7 PM on Wednesday (October 9) at Murphy Funeral & Cremation Chapels, 1961 Ridge Rd., Ontario, NY 14519.  A memorial service for Margie will be held on Thursday (October 10), 10 AM at North Ontario United Methodist Church, 7200 Ontario Center Rd., Ontario, NY 14519. Margie will be laid to rest in Furnaceville Cemetery.
