4th seed William Smith upends U of R

November 5, 2014

Alessandra Patrizio and Hannah Wood scored 95 seconds apart late in the match to push William Smith College past the University of Rochester, 3-2, in the semifinals of the Liberty League field hockey playoffs at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. (11/5/14)

Wood (Sidney, NY/Sidney) scored two goals for the Herons (11-7). Patrizio (Wynnewood, PA/Lower Merion) had one. Michelle Relin (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township) and Megan Keil (Syracuse, NY/Camden) scored the Rochester (15-5) goals.

William Smith advances to the Liberty League championship game to play second-seeded Skidmore College (16-3). Skidmore advanced with a 4-1 home field victory over third-seeded Vassar. The game will be played Saturday at a time to be announced. The Liberty League playoff champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Wood put the Herons in front at 25:15. She swept in from left wing and her original shot was blocked by Rochester defender Tiffany White (Allentown, PA/William Allen). Wood recovered, picked up the blocked shot and charged straight through the circle where she whistled a shot through traffic into the back of the cage. Thirty seconds later, she nearly doubled the lead. Her shot from deep in the circle hit the left post and bounced away.

Rochester equalized at 54:24. The Yellowjackets earned a penalty corner. After a series of passes at the top of the circle, Belle Hoagland (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) slid a pass on the right to Relin. From eight yards away, she rapidly lined it into the back of the cage.

After seeing only two goals in the first 60 minutes, there was a three-goal flurry in less than four minutes. Wood and Patrizio attacked on the right side of the circle. Rochester goaltender Tara Lamberti (Penfield, NY/Penfield) came off the line to challenge Wood. The official’s hand went up to signal a penalty corner but Patrizio got to the ball first and tapped it into the open cage from five yards away at 61:33.

Shortly afterwards, Wood was just outside the crease and lost her balance. She managed to get a stick on the ball and flick it into the cage at 63:08. It was her 22nd goal of the season.

Rochester trimmed the lead to one goal at 65:06. White played a penalty corner to Hoagland at the top of the circle. She slid it to the left side where Keil’s shot deflected off the pads of William Smith goaltender Catherine Hare and flew into the top corner of the net.

Lamberti finished with 12 saves for Rochester. Hare made five saves for William Smith. The Herons held a 22-12 shot advantage over the Yellowjackets. Rochester had eight penalty corners to seven for William Smith.

During the regular season, Rochester defeated William Smith, 3-2, in Geneva. The victory clinched the top seed in the Liberty League playoffs for Rochester (which had beaten Skidmore in a head-to-head matchup in late September).
