Times of Wayne CountySunday will mark the final race of the South Butler Dragway’s tenth season.
"Feels like yesterday we all met at Tom Wahl’s in Newak to figure this whole thing out," track announcer and local NASCAR officianado "Racin’ Randy" Salerno tells The Times. "This decade has just flown by."
And the farm track at 13225 Butler-Conquest Rd. in Savannah has gone from two strips of asphalt to a track with guardrails, a press box, a fully-functioning PA system, sponsors and a place for hundreds of cars and race fans to not only watch, but race.
"Last month, we had Bill Lerentz’s funny car, and boy did everyone get a kick out of that," he added. "We had kids and old folks both taking pictures in the car and we got to see it run, too. It was great!
"We’re just hoping the last race gives us a proper send-off for our tenth year!"
And a little birdie tells The Times that there won’t be any other racin’ by next weekend, so this may be everyone’s last hurrah for 2026.
Don’t forget about the "chase" at South Butler, either. Joe "Schmoe" Williams and his black Chevy Camaro still hold the track speed record at 122.9 miles per hour.
