SU Men's Soccer Defeats Albany 2-1

by Wade Holdraker
October 8, 2014
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 4 Orange (10-1-0) defeated Albany (3-4-5) by a score of 2-1 on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at the SU Soccer Stadium to establish its best start in program history. The 1984 SU men’s soccer team opened their season 9-1-0 before ending their tenth match in a draw.

Jordan Murrell (Markham, Ontario, Canada) opened the scoring for the Orange in the 33rd minute when his corner kick bent beautifully through the Albany defenders and keeper into the far corner of the net. It was Murrell’s second goal of the season and the third time Syracuse has scored on a corner kick in 2014.
Murrell’s goal was the first time this season Albany has allowed a goal in the first half of a match.

Chris Nanco (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) and Emil Ekblom (Bekkestua, Norway) helped the Orange control the ball in the attacking end for the majority of the first half, rarely allowing the Great Danes to cross midfield. Albany recorded just one shot in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half of play, Albany swung the momentum back in their favor. Afonso Pinheiro broke into the open and received a pass from Leo Melgar in the 56th minute of play, and beat
Orange goalkeeper Alex Bono (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) on the short side. Great Danes keeper Tim Allen played all 90 minutes and recorded seven saves.

Alex Halis (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) came into the match in the 81st minute for the Orange. Just one minute later, Halis received a pass from Julian Buescher (Duelmen, Germany)and Stefanos Stamoulacatos (Camillus, N.Y.) and ripped a shot that deflected off a defender and into the top left corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
Syracuse outshot Albany 17-4 in the match, and earned nine corner kicks to three earned by the Great Danes.
Up next for the Orange is ACC foe Wake Forest who comes to the SU Soccer Stadium on Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. Admission to the match is free.
